THE BOGSIDE ARTISTS

Talks and Presentations

  • Does the practice of art heal?

  • It is an  indisputable fact that it does. Art and music have a physically benign affect on body and mind. They can also change a person's appreciation of their world. They change attitude, emotional state, and perception. They engender a new dimension of hope and positivism and put a person in touch with their feelings and inbuilt, free capacity to make decisions to direct their own lives. Creativity awakens intelligence because intelligent perception is its modus operandi. Such activity heals. Up to the end of his life Carl Jung involved himself in creative activity in the service of his own spiritual development.
  • What is the relationship between art practice and politics?
  • What is it like to be a muralist working during a period of severe civil unrest at the risk of life and limb?
  • What affect does one's art work have on a community?
  • What the relationship between art and propaganda?
  • Should the artist put his personal development before the needs of his community when that community is under siege within and without?
  • Who indeed are these famous three who call themselves The Bogside Artists?

To answer these questions Tom, William and Kevin have travelled the world giving talks, presentations and lectures to many thousands of students and staff alike.

These talks have never been less than captivating and have proved immensely popular. They are certainly not in the run-of-the-mill boring old monologue from your average 'expert in his field'. They are very different, very much 'off the wall' so to speak and visually exciting. Their unique contribution as lectures or presentations is that they teach art students in a memorable way the relationship between their chosen craft or discipline and the real world. Students of whatever discipline from sociology to history come away with new insights into their studies.
